People fed a specific microbe had better mental health and were less likely to develop depression than those given a fake medication. In response, “psychobiotics” were created. Psychobiotics are probiotics that boost mood.

Our Current Psychobiotic Knowledge

Over twenty studies on probiotics and mental health have shown no conclusive results. Dr. Megan Rossi, a gut health expert, thinks psychobiotics need further study to see whether they work, especially for serious diseases like depression. The challenge is difficult because we must select helpful microorganisms and develop methods based on illness severity.
