QUAD CITIES, IA/IL – Residents across Iowa and Illinois faced dangerously cold conditions Sunday morning. Wind chill is expected to drop to minus 27 degrees in some parts of the region.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), a cold weather advisory will be in effect from 3 a.m. to noon Sunday. The advisory includes cities like Davenport, Cedar Rapids, Dubuque and Rock Island. So little cold air can cause frostbite on exposed skin within 30 minutes.
Residents should dress in layers, wear a hat and gloves, and limit outdoor exposure. Pets must remain indoors and portable heaters must be used safely. Testing of vulnerable neighbors and family members is also encouraged.
The NWS warns that hypothermia can occur quickly if proper precautions are not taken. Travelers should prepare emergency kits with blankets and ensure vehicles are prepared for winter.
As temperatures drop, officials stress the importance of planning in advance to reduce the risk of these life-threatening conditions. For additional updates, follow local forecasts.
