GOODLAND, KS – Severe cold and dangerous wind chills are expected across parts of Kansas, Nebraska and Colorado through Tuesday morning. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Cold Weather Advisory from Saturday evening through Sunday morning, with an extreme cold watch in place through Tuesday.
According to the NWS, wind chills will drop as low as -30°F in some areas, which can be life-threatening. The advisory includes the cities of Goodland, Burlington, Sharon Springs and Benkelman. Frostbite can occur in as little as 30 minutes, and hypothermia is a risk for anyone exposed to these conditions without adequate protection.
Residents are urged to take precautions to prevent frostbite, hypothermia and freezing in pipes. Officials recommend insulating pipes, keeping pets indoors and making sure to use portable heaters safely. Young or small animals face the greatest risk.
Prolonged freezing temperatures can cause significant disruption. Neighbors are encouraged to check on the elderly and make sure animals have shelter, food and unfrozen water. The NWS advises to monitor weather updates through Tuesday and prepare for extreme cold.
