BLACKSBURG, VA – A winter storm is expected to drop up to 8 inches of snow in parts of Virginia by Monday morning. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for Watauga County and West Greenbrier, in effect Sunday through 7 a.m. Monday.
According to the National Weather Service, snow will begin to accumulate by Sunday morning, with the heaviest snowfall expected Sunday night. Watauga County is expected to see 3 to 6 inches of rain, while western Greenbrier could see up to 8 inches. Wind gusts could reach 40 mph, increasing the risk of power outages due to snow-laden tree branches.
Officials have warned that roads, bridges and overpasses will potentially become slick and dangerous, posing a danger to drivers. Travel is discouraged during this period, especially during Monday morning travel.
Residents are urged to stay indoors and prepare for possible power outages. Have extra supplies ready, including flashlights, water and food in case of emergencies. For those going out, it is important to dress in layers and cover exposed skin to prevent frostbite.
