Marquette, MI – A severe wind chill advisory will remain in effect for much of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula through Monday night. Wind chills as low as 35 degrees below zero are expected in Iron and Gogebic counties.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), the advisory began at 9 PM CST on Saturday night and will continue until 9 PM CST on Monday night. Ontonagon, Houghton, Baraga and Marquette counties may also see wind chills between 25 and 30 degrees below zero. Under these circumstances frostbite on exposed skin can occur within 10 to 30 minutes.
Residents are urged to limit outdoor exposure, wear layers and ensure appropriate coverage with hats and gloves. Officials warn that prolonged outdoor activities could cause hypothermia or frostbite. Drivers should carry emergency supplies in case of vehicle-related problems.
The NWS emphasizes taking precautions during this extreme cold and advises residents to avoid unnecessary travel and monitor vulnerable individuals. This extreme cold highlights the importance of winter preparations in the region.
