IRS Accepts Tax Filings, Deadline Set for April 15: Don’t Miss the 2023 Taxes Cutoff

As April commences, the impending tax-filing deadline draws near. With less than a fortnight left, taxpayers are reminded to promptly submit their 2023 tax returns. The IRS commenced accepting federal tax filings on January 29 this year, setting Tax Day for April 15. Should individuals be unable to meet this deadline, they have the option to request an extension until October 15 by completing Form 4868. Nonetheless, those filing late should note the possibility of facing penalties if taxes remain unpaid by April 15. Filing taxes can be done online or through traditional mail. Various assistance programs cater to different income brackets and demographics, including the IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance and the AARP Foundation Tax-Aide for eligible individuals. The IRS Free File program offers free federal income tax preparation and filing services for those earning $73,000 or less annually. Additionally, service members may utilize MilTax for free tax preparation. The IRS also introduced a new pilot program, IRS Direct File, offering free online filing directly through their platform.

Extensions Available: Request Form 4868 for October 15 Deadline if Unable to Meet April 15 Tax Filing

Once taxes are filed, individuals eagerly anticipate their refunds. While the IRS aims to issue most refunds via direct deposit within 21 days, certain factors like claiming specific credits or filing methods may delay the process. Taxpayers can track their refunds using the “Where’s My Refund?” tool on the IRS website or through the IRS2Go app. Delaware residents can also utilize the state tax refund locator. As the tax deadline draws near, individuals are encouraged to ensure their returns are submitted on time to avoid complications and penalties.
