Jackson, KY – A cold weather advisory has been issued for Eastern Kentucky, with temperatures expected to drop to dangerously low levels Sunday night.
The National Weather Service (NWS) in Jackson, KY warned that wind chills will reach as low as 10 degrees below zero between 7 pm Sunday and noon Monday. This advisory affects several counties including Pike, Whitley, Harlan, Laurel and Rowan.
According to the NWS, the combination of cold temperatures and strong winds can lead to hypothermia if precautions are not taken. Residents are advised to limit outdoor activities, dress in several layers, and wear a hat and gloves. Older adults, children and pets are especially vulnerable during extreme cold.
Prolonged exposure to subzero temperatures can also cause water pipes to freeze and break. Officials recommend wrapping exposed pipes or letting faucets drip to avoid freezing. Additionally, residents should ensure that portable heaters are used safely and avoid using grills or generators indoors to reduce the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.
Emergency officials urge frequent checks on neighbors and family members during the extreme cold. “Stay informed and prepared,” NWS officials advised in their Saturday afternoon statement.
This advisory will remain in effect till Monday afternoon.
