In a distressing incident last week, a 26-year-old mother from Kansas City was arrested on suspicion of killing her one-month-old infant after allegedly placing the baby into an oven. The tragic event unfolded when police responded to a report of a non-breathing baby on February 9. Upon arrival, they discovered the lifeless infant with apparent burn injuries, and sadly, the Kansas City Fire Department pronounced the baby dead at the scene.

According to a redacted probable cause statement from the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office, the mother, Mariah Thomas, informed her grandfather that she had intended to put her daughter down for a nap but mistakenly placed her in the oven instead of her crib. The grandfather promptly called 911, and upon the arrival of fire personnel, handed over the baby.

Remarkably, the infant was found in her car seat near the front door, with the affidavit detailing “apparent thermal injuries” on various parts of her body, and her clothing seemingly melted onto her diaper. Investigators discovered a baby blanket with significant burn marks, adding to the tragic narrative.

The Jackson County Prosecutor wasted no time in charging Thomas with first-degree endangering the welfare of a child, leading to the mother’s detainment in the Jackson County Detention Center. Prosecutor Jean Baker expressed gratitude towards the first responders and prosecutors involved, acknowledging the gravity of the tragedy and emphasizing the trust placed in the criminal justice system to address such distressing circumstances.
