Biden Condemns Military Junta Coup in Africa, Reaffirms Commitment to Democracy

The U.S. President, Joe Biden, strongly condemned the military junta’s actions in West and Central Africa at the 78th UN General Assembly. Additionally, he reaffirmed the U.S.’ commitment to promoting democracy.

President Biden Condemned Unconstitutional Takeover of Military Junta

Punch reports that the United States of America President, Joe Biden, has delivered his speech at the 78th United Nations General Assembly. In his speech, he expressed his support for the action that the African Union (AU) and the Economic Community West African States (ECOWAS) took to exert pressure on the military junta in the Nigeria Republic.

According to President Biden’s address, the objective of both AU and ECOWAS is to restore constitutional order in Nigeria after the military junta’s action and reinstate the ousted President, Mohamed Bazoum.

The ousted president was removed from office by a military junta on July 2023 in a coup d’etat that received widespread condemnation from key international stakeholders, including U.S., U.K., ECOWAS, and France.

President Biden Emphasized Democracy

According to the report from Daybreak, President Biden emphasized democracy in his speech at the United Nations General Assembly, in which he also condemned the military junta of the Nigerian Republic.

Moreover, the U.S. also stated in his speech that he fully supports ECOWAS in restoring democracy in Niger after the unsuccessful negotiations with the military junta.
