Rising Violent Crime Rates in Nebraska Cities: Safety Concerns and Economic Factors

In 2024, Nebraska faces a big problem with more violent crimes happening in many cities. Southwest Journal looked at 21 cities and found out that the crime rates are higher than the national average. This hasn’t been seen since 2000. Omaha is one of the cities that keeps showing up as very dangerous. The places with lots of people without jobs and not much money seem to have more crime. It’s a tough situation where safety is a big concern. People living in the safest places in Nebraska are lucky while others have to deal with worrying about their safety every day.

5 Most Dangerous Places in Nebraska

North Platte

North Platte, Nebraska is known for its Wild West history is considered the most dangerous city in the state. Despite being home to Buffalo Bill it has high rates of violent and property crimes.

Visitors can go up the Golden Spike Tower for a great view. From there they can see the Union Pacific Railroad Bailey Yard, which has lots of trains.

Omaha

Omaha, Nebraska has a lot of history but is also dangerous. It’s the second most dangerous city in Nebraska.

One famous event is the NCAA College World Series. But parts of the city are risky, especially the east and south.

Scottsbluff

Scottsbluff in the panhandle region of Nebraska is also dangerous. It’s named after a big cliff overlooking the Platte River.

Tourists might want to see the old roads or go hiking. But they should be careful because the city has a fair amount of violent crime.

Grand Island

Grand Island, Nebraska has a police training center but is still dangerous. People have a higher chance of experiencing crime here than in other places.

Even though it’s a training center for police, crime rates are still high. People need to stay alert.

South Sioux City

South Sioux City, on the Missouri River is the fifth most dangerous city in Nebraska. It has a small version of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.

But crime rates are still high with a risk of both violent and property crimes. An unsolved murder in 2003 reminds people of the dangers there.
