Miguel Garcia, who owns supermarkets in the Bronx says his stores have seen an inflation in sales since they started promoting canned meats like Spam and Libby’s Corned Beef.
This shift in shopping habits comes as grocery prices have gone up by 21% in the last three years making it harder for cash strapped families to afford nutritious food. While some big food companies are offering discounts many people are still struggling to afford fresh, healthy options. Instead, they are turning to cheaper shelf stable foods like canned meats and snacks made from corn and sunflower seeds to feed their families.
