Beyond the Beauty: Revealing Vermont’s Safety Divide and the Call for Statewide Security Solutions

Although Vermont is known for its picturesque scenery and generally tranquil atmosphere, the survey uncovered significant variations in crime rates across the state. While certain residents may perceive their neighborhoods as secure, the data underscore the disparities in safety levels throughout Vermont. This emphasizes the imperative for increased initiatives aimed at enhancing overall community safety statewide, ultimately fostering a more secure environment for all inhabitants.

Top 10 Urban Danger Zones In Vermont

1. BRATTLEBORO

With a population of 12,256, Brattleboro is Vermont’s deadliest city. Its distinction is not only because it ranks first; rather, it has the highest total crime rate in the state, exceeding the national average by a staggering 70%. What makes Brattleboro so hazardous? The figures provide a clear picture. With Vermont’s highest property crime rate, consumers have a frightening 1 in 16 chance of falling victim to theft or vandalism in 2022, even on routine trips to the Farmers’ Market. Furthermore, burglary is a serious concern, with Brattleboro having the highest burglary rate in the state. This emphasizes the crucial importance for people to install proper security measures to protect their homes and valuables in this congested area.

2. WINOOSKI

Winooski, located northeast of Burlington, is Vermont’s second-least safe city. Despite a small decline in violent and property crime rates over the prior year, the Winooski Police Department continues to face substantial problems. With Vermont’s second worst murder rate and 13th highest number of rape charges, people are reminded to be cautious and safeguard their houses, particularly in Winooski, which has the state’s fifth highest burglary rate. These troubling numbers emphasize the constant effort required to solve neighborhood safety concerns and protect people’s well-being.

3. ST. ALBANS

Kicking off our countdown of Vermont’s most hazardous locales for 2024 is St. Albans, a city of 7,022 residents situated roughly thirty minutes north of Burlington. Despite witnessing a decrease in property crimes compared to the previous year, St. Albans has experienced a surge in violent offenses. Ranking second in the state for rates of assault, robbery, rape, or murder, the city presents a concerning statistic of 1 in 175 odds of encountering such crimes in 2022. While there has been some improvement in property crime, it still ranks sixth highest statewide, highlighting the importance of vigilance and safeguarding valuables, especially for visitors passing through St. Albans during events like the Vermont Maple Festival.

4. RUTLAND

Rutland, Vermont’s third-largest city, has clinched the position of the fourth most perilous place to call home, a ranking that likely comes as little surprise to many residents. Despite maintaining steady crime rates over the past year, Rutland boasts the state’s sixth-highest rate of violent crime, translating to a one-in-208 chance of experiencing a violent incident annually. With incidents of more than one property crime occurring daily, including an average of over one burglary per week in 2022, concerns regarding safety remain prevalent. It is crucial for establishments like the Norman Rockwell Museum to implement robust security measures to deter potential burglaries and ensure the safety of both locals and visitors.

5. BURLINGTON

Situated in Burlington, the largest city in Vermont, the University of Vermont finds itself amidst the state’s sixth most hazardous locality for 2024. Despite its vibrant ambiance, Burlington has witnessed a notable uptick in both violent and property crimes over the past year. With the third-highest homicide rate and the 16th-highest rape rate statewide, residents face concerning statistics. Maintaining vigilance is paramount, particularly when traversing Church Street, where an average of three property offenses occur daily. This surge in criminal activity underscores the pressing need for comprehensive community-wide initiatives aimed at bolstering security and addressing the root causes of Burlington’s safety challenges.

6. BENNINGTON

Recently labeled as the sixth most perilous place to reside, Bennington, located in southern Vermont, has undergone a worrying surge in both violent and property crimes, catapulting it five spots higher on the danger scale. With a population of 15,301, the town has unfortunately attained the dubious distinction of harboring Vermont’s highest violent crime rate, instilling apprehensions regarding public safety. Once a beacon of historical pride, the Bennington Battle Monument now serves as a somber symbol of the community’s ongoing security challenges. Additionally, boasting the tenth highest burglary rate in the state, residents are urged to exercise caution and fortify their homes against potential intrusions. These unsettling trends underscore the urgent necessity for collaborative endeavors aimed at curbing crime and fostering community safety in Bennington.

7. ST. JOHNSBURY

Nestled in northeastern Vermont, close to the New Hampshire border and less than 50 miles from Canada, St. Johnsbury presents a unique blend of rural charm and cultural attractions, including the renowned Fairbanks Museum & Planetarium. Despite its picturesque setting, as the primary population center in the vicinity, St. Johnsbury grapples with its share of challenges, prominently among them being crime. Ranked as the seventh most hazardous area in Vermont, residents contend with elevated rates of robbery, burglary, and theft. These pressing concerns underscore the imperative for community-wide initiatives aimed at mitigating crime and enhancing safety within St. Johnsbury.

8. BARRE

Barre is about fifteen minutes southeast of Montpelier and has the dubious distinction of being the sixth most dangerous town in Vermont. Barre, a town of 8,447 people, is proud of its granite history but struggles with issues of street safety. Unfortunately, Barre’s violent crime rate in 2022 ranked fourth in Vermont, which is concerning to the locals. Its position as the state with the highest reported rate of rape cases is very concerning. These alarming figures highlight how important it is for communities and local government to prioritize safety measures in addition to addressing the root causes of crime in Barre.

9. SOUTH BURLINGTON

South Burlington, which has a population of 20,307, has Vermont’s ninth-highest crime rate. Although the city is lower on the list than its equivalent in the north, it has more property crimes. Residents faced a 1 in 25 risk of theft or property damage in 2022. This could be related to instances like shoplifting at the biggest mall in the state or attempts to steal knowledge about new varieties of Ben & Jerry’s ice cream from corporate headquarters. Notwithstanding these difficulties, South Burlington has the lowest violent crime rate among the cities listed, providing comfort to people who avoid shopping there.

10. MONTPELIER

Located in the north central part of Vermont, the capital city of Montpelier is well-known for its magnificent State House, which is topped with a gold dome. But underlying its picturesque façade is a harsher reality characterized by high rates of violence, larceny, and auto theft. Montpelier, home to just 7,995 people, has a secret underbelly that frequently betrays its idyllic exterior. This charming New England town is ranked as the ninth most dangerous city in Vermont for violent crime, so there’s an urgent need for extensive community-wide programs to address safety issues and reduce criminal activity.
