At the Kent Animal Shelter located in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Valentine’s Day was not as special a day as it should have been for a very sweet dog abandoned in the nearby Meijer parking lot. Thankfully, some very kind people spotted the dog and brought her to the shelter.
Tied to the dog’s collar was a note:

my name is Rukey. please help me, take me home.
The shelter had been very moved emotionally by the note, and according to the organization’s Facebook page, there have been a number of adoption offers for Rukey.
A heartwarming message was later left for the unknown owner:

To the person who had to make the heartbreaking decision to let her go – please know that Rukey is safe and deeply loved by our staff. Her gentle personality has already won our hearts, and we will ensure she is cared for and finds a wonderful, loving family. We can only imagine how difficult this choice was for you, and we sincerely hope you find brighter days ahead.
The Kent County community wants pet owners to know that help is available, and if you’re struggling to live or feed your pet, there are resources available to help. The community will help out with food, connect people in need with social services and help as much as possible.
Please, if you need help, reach out. The goal of the shelter is to help keep pets and families together.
And please note, it is illegal to abandon a pet. There are better solutions as suggested above. Fortunately, Rukey was rescued just in time; we all shudder to think what could have happened to her if the Good Samaritans had not come along at the right time.
