Local law enforcement in Kansas staged a bizarre raid in the Marion County Record. Officers seized computers, cellphones, and other materials from the office, according to the Kansas Reflector (nonprofit newsroom).
I Don’t Know What To Do- Eric Meyer Says
According to Eric Meyer (Record’s Publisher and Owner), the raid came after an anonymous source leaked sensitive information about Marion restaurant owner to the paper. He added the message from his newspaper was clear and designed to warn reporters: “Mind your own business or we’re going to step on you.”
Also, Meyer said during the interview that seven officers took everything they have during the search. Marion County District Court Magistrate Judge Laura Viar signed the search warrant for the Marion County Record and appeared she violate federal law after the officers seized materials from the journalists’ office. As of now, she doesn’t respond to the issue or explain why she gave authorization for the illegal raid.
Also according to the source, Eric Meyer reported to the police, Kari Newell (Marion Restaurant Owner) kicked newspaper staff out of a meeting. Keri Newell responded to the issue on her personal FB page. Meyer reportedly to the police, Newell had been convicted of drunken driving and continued to use her vehicle without a driver’s license. After what happened, Eric Meyer doesn’t know what to do after they seized his materials in the Marion County Record office and said they’ll publish something.
