Governor Newsom’s Relief Initiative Faces Challenges Despite Intent to Alleviate Rising Costs for Californians
According to KCRA3, recent audit report by the California State Auditor has highlighted major problems with the Middle Class Tax Refund (MCTR) program. Middle Class Tax Refund program was set up by Governor Gavin Newsom to help Californians facing higher prices for things like gas and groceries. Despite aiming to give each eligible person $400, the Middle Class Tax Refund program ran into lots of issues.

Marred by Operational Challenges and Criticism
The Middle Class Tax Refund program faced issues from the start, shifting plans and eventually being managed by the Franchise Tax Board. Payments were meant to be made via Money Network, LLC debit cards, but complaints arose. Assemblymember Jim Patterson and others criticized the audit suggesting caution in future dealings with Money Network.
