Chinese National Faces Charges for Alleged Theft of Google’s AI Secrets

Linwei Ding also called Leon Ding has been charged by a federal jury for taking secrets from Google. He is accused of stealing special information about artificial intelligence (AI) technology. The charges say he worked secretly with companies in China to steal these secrets while working at Google. Ding, who’s 38 and lives in California was arrested in Newark.

The Attorney General Merrick B. Garland said the government won’t let people steal important technology like AI that could hurt the country’s safety. The Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco mentioned that while AI has benefits, it also brings risks so they’ll stop anyone trying to take it unlawfully. The U.S. Attorney Ismail Ramsey, stressed how serious it is to steal secrets especially in Silicon Valley.

Ding’s Alleged Theft of 500+ Google AI Files Raises Serious Legal Consequences

Ding allegedly took more than 500 secret files from Google’s AI projects. He apparently tried to hide his actions by using his personal Google account and pretending he was in the U.S. when he was actually in China. If found guilty Ding could go to prison for up to 10 years for each charge. The FBI and Commerce Department are investigating, and the case is being handled by the U.S. Attorney’s Office in California. This effort is part of a group called the Disruptive Technology Strike Force, which tries to stop sensitive technology from getting into the wrong hands.
