Charlotte Church’s Affordable Housing Initiative Tackles Gentrification Crisis

Reverend Dr. Dwayne A. Walker marked a new chapter for the Little Rock A.M.E. Zion Church in Charlotte, North Carolina, as he unveiled Varick On 7th on March 26. This initiative introduces a 105-unit mixed-use apartment complex offering both market-rate and affordable housing, symbolizing the church’s expanded outreach beyond its physical boundaries. Collaborating with Laurel Street Residential and the city’s Community Development Corporation, Varick On 7th aims to combat the challenges of gentrification and escalating housing costs in historically Black and working-class neighborhoods. Currently, Mecklenburg County faces a deficit of over 26,000 affordable housing units.

Seniors and people with disabilities are among the fastest-growing groups in need of affordable housing solutions.
