Representative Andy X. Vargas Advocates for Inclusive Tax Policies to Benefit Immigrant Households
Campaign Led by Rep. Vargas Aims to Expand Tax Break Access for Immigrant Households in Massachusetts
Representative Andy X. Vargas from Haverhill is leading a campaign to make it easier for immigrant households to get a tax break called the Earned Income Tax Credit in Massachusetts. Last week, Vargas and others talked about why it’s important to let more immigrant families qualify for this credit. Thousands of immigrant households can’t get this tax break because of their immigration status.
At a meeting organized by a group called the Black and Latino Caucus and Vargas explained why he thinks it’s fair to change the rules. He said immigrant workers pay taxes but many can’t get this tax credit because they don’t have a Social Security number. If the change happens it could mean a lot of money for families – up to $2,972 for families with three or more kids, according to the report of Wavelengths.

Debate Over Tax Rule Change for Immigrant Households: Balancing Costs and Benefits
Some people worry that changing the rules will cost the state too much money. But supporters of the change say the benefits outweigh the costs. They say it’s a small amount compared to the overall state budget. Letting more families get this tax credit could mean better health and education for their kids. With more people agreeing it looks like this change might happen soon.
