New York Lawmakers Propose Tax Breaks for Farmworker Housing

WAMC – In New York State, lawmakers are pushing a new law to help both farms and people who need homes through tax credit. State Senator Jim Tedisco and Assembly Member Marianne Buttenschon are leading the effort. They say the law will give a 20 percent tax break to build houses for farmworkers. This will help prevent more farms from closing down which has been a big problem in New York.

Lawmakers Hope Proposed Legislation Will Stem Farm Losses and Address Homelessness

The lawmakers say the state lost many family farms in recent years. This law aims to stop that trend. It will also provide homes for homeless people. Jeff Williams who works with farmers, says it is important to invest in farms and the people who work on them. He believes this law could help farms grow and bring more jobs to rural areas. The law is now being discussed by the Senate Budget and Revenue Committee. If it passes it could make a big difference for farms and people who need homes in New York State.
