The controversy arose when House Republican Rep. Greg Murphy introduced “The EDUCATE Act,” aiming to cut federal funding from medical schools offering DEI programs and scholarships for specific racial groups. Murphy criticized these programs, claiming they teach subjects like “intersectionality” and “white supremacy,” which he believes are discriminatory. However, Democrats like Kelly argue that diversifying the medical field is crucial for better patient care and experience.

Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) members, including Horsford, are pushing back against these Republican-led efforts. They’re urging U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland to investigate whether state universities violate civil rights protections by eliminating DEI programs. Despite the bill’s introduction, it’s unlikely to pass in the Democratic-majority Senate, signaling a broader ideological clash over diversity and inclusion in education and beyond.
