A group called the ABC7 I-Team looked into it and found that some folks are seeing their property tax surge increase a lot—almost 650%! This doesn’t seem fair to homeowners because the new property tax surge amounts don’t match how much their homes are really worth. It’s making it hard for families to afford to keep living in their houses.

Amid Property Tax Surge: South Side Cook County Homeowners Seek Relief and Fair Assessments

Jami Flaws and her husband are worried about their property tax surge jumping from $7,000 to over $16,000. Others like Tom Ahern are considering selling their homes to avoid high taxes. The Cook County Assessor admitted mistakes and promised to fix them offering hope to affected homeowners. Township Assessor Patrick Hynes is working to ensure fair assessments and assist with property tax surge. With support from the Cook County Board of Review there’s potential for improvement but continued advocacy is crucial to address rising property tax surge in areas like Cook County’s south side.
