In New York City, Mayor Eric Adams proudly announced a major milestone in the city’s efforts to help struggling families. He revealed that his administration has nearly wiped out the backlog of applications for SNAP (food assistance) and cash aid. This backlog had once ballooned to over 50,000 applications last summer, causing significant delays for those in need.

Thanks to investments in both staff and technology, the city has made remarkable progress. Molly Wasow Park, the commissioner of the Department of Social Services highlighted the massive effort involved. Nearly a thousand new staff were hired and technological upgrades were made to streamline the application process. Overall, more than 600,000 cases have been processed, marking a significant victory for low-income New Yorkers.

City Officials Address Challenges of SNAP Benefit Theft, Extend Deadline for Replacement Claims

However, challenges persist, such as incidents of SNAP benefit theft through skimming. Despite these challenges city officials have processed thousands of claims for replacement benefits, totaling over $21 million. To further assist those affected, the deadline for submitting claims has been extended. For those still in need of assistance, applications for SNAP or cash aid can be submitted online. Similarly, individuals seeking replacement benefits can visit the designated website to file their claims.
