$145M Theft Compensation for Kia and Hyundai Owners – Are You Qualified?

Kia and Hyundai Settlement Addresses Vehicle Theft Concerns

Owners to Receive Compensation and Software Update

According to MyStateline.com, Kia and Hyundai owners are set to receive notices next week regarding a $145 million class action settlement related to a lawsuit alleging the car makers’ failure to install engine immobilizers in certain models. This settlement comes as a response to concerns over vehicle theft and particularly involving teenage thieves known as “Kia Boyz” who have been engaging in reckless behavior including dangerous stunts and crimes with stolen cars often boasting about their exploits on social media.

A lawsuit involving Hyundai and Kia models made from 2011 to 2022 has highlighted a problem these cars can be easily stolen using just a cellphone and a USB cord. Thieves can remove certain parts near the steering wheel to start the car without a key. Luckily, newer 2022 models have a solution called an engine immobilizer to stop this. As part of the settlement, people who own these affected cars will get money and a free update for their car’s software to fix the problem. They can also get up to $50 back for buying anti theft devices.
