Challenges Mount as Pacific Nations Navigate Chinese Security Offers and US Funding Delays
U.S. lawmakers worry about Kiribati getting help from Chinese police fearing it could make Kiribati less independent and give China more power in the Pacific according to VOA News. They say the U.S. needs to work more closely with countries like Kiribati to counter China’s growing influence. Some lawmakers are concerned that relying on China for security could harm democracy and human rights in Kiribati. China has been offering to help Pacific nations with their safety issues like Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands. Some countries are okay with this, but others, like Fiji are reconsidering their deals with China. Lawmakers are also worried because the U.S. hasn’t given promised money to its Pacific allies which could make them more vulnerable to Chinese influence.
