The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has officially marked the commencement of the 2024 tax season, slated to begin accepting and processing 2023 tax returns from January 29, 2024. In addition to the anticipated 128.7 million individual tax returns, the IRS is unveiling a suite of new tools designed to streamline the tax-filing process and bolster efficiency for taxpayers.
Advanced Filing Tools for Taxpayers
To facilitate early preparation, the IRS Free File, available to individuals earning less than $79,000, will launch on January 12, offering a head start for eligible taxpayers. Moreover, the IRS Direct File pilot, rolled out in phases, will allow select taxpayers to file returns directly with the IRS online, with full availability expected by mid-March.
The IRS is revamping Taxpayer Assistance Centers nationwide, aiming to provide in-person services for those seeking tax-related guidance. Simultaneously, the “Where’s My Refund?” tool is being enhanced to offer comprehensive updates on the status of tax returns, demonstrating the IRS’s commitment to improving operational efficiency.
IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel expressed optimism, emphasizing the significant improvements expected during the upcoming filing season. The agency’s efforts, fueled by new funding, are geared towards simplifying the tax-filing experience and driving meaningful assistance to taxpayers.
