Prosecutors from Mexico City went to the extreme hiring marines to accompany them as they crossed state boundaries to jail Uriel Carmona, the attorney general of the neighboring state of Morelos.
Mexican Prosecutor in the Investigation of Murder Case
From the article published by AP News, the scenario on Friday in Cuernavaca, the capital of Morelos state, was akin to a soap opera, including a former national soccer star, drug traffickers, scores of heavily armed agents, and political scandals. A member of Carmona’s crew recorded the arrest live on Facebook.
Prosecutors in Mexico City claimed that Carmona was detained on suspicion of hindering the investigation into the 2022 murder of a lady from Mexico City, whose body was discovered discarded just across the state line in Morelos.

Carmona Involving in Political Conspiracy
However, Carmona asserts that he is the target of a political plot involving current Morelos state governor and former soccer player Cuauhtémoc Blanco. Carmona claimed that because he was looking into Blanco’s potential connections to drug dealers, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador had ordered his detention.
After a three-year-old photo of Blanco standing with three men identified as local drug gang bosses appeared, Blanco, a political supporter of López Obrador’s, denied any connections to drug traffickers. In 2022, Blanco admitted that he had no idea who the individuals were and had assumed they were simply soccer enthusiasts because he often posed for pictures with them.
Before being apprehended at his house, Carmona gave an interview to the MVS radio station in which he said he was the target of political persecution and blamed the president as well as Mexico City Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum, who is currently a candidate for the Morena party’s presidential nomination. Because detectives have launched more than ten investigations into the Morelos governor, Cuauhtémoc Blanco, for several major offenses, including what appears to be tied to organized crime, Carmona claimed that the campaign was launched against him to protect him. Since an attorney general must first be impeached, Carmona claimed that his arrest was unlawful.
The Supreme Court decided that Carmona could not be detained without first being impeached, but López Obrador’s office rejected the decision in a statement in July, stating that it did not extend to allegations like obstructing justice. Sheinbaum disputed Carmona’s assertions, asserting that “this is not a political issue, this is an issue of justice.” Sheinbaum resigned from her position as mayor of Mexico City to run for the presidency of the ruling party in 2024. Sheinbaum charged Carmona in 2022 with deliberately mishandling the autopsy of 27-year-old Ariadna López to cover up her murder. Sheinbaum said that Carmona was connected to the alleged murderer, but she would not elaborate.
