Woman’s Remains Finally Identified
According to Bastrop County Sheriff’s Office news conference on Thursday, the young woman’s remains found by law enforcement on the side of a Texas highway have been identified.
The sheriff’s office has stated that the woman’s name was Kathy Ann Smith, 22 years old, almost 23, at the time of her murder. Investigators at that time did not know the woman’s identity, and only 44 years later was she identified when Sergeant James Miller began examining the case again.

Woman’s Family Got Closure After 44 Years
According to the Sergeant who examined the case, there was not enough information to produce a profile at the time of the murder of the unfortunate woman. Thus, in 2022, another exhumation was conducted, and enough DNA existed for a lab to identify the remains through genealogy.
The homicide victim was identified in April 2023 and discovered that she was adopted. The law enforcement officers informed the victim’s adopted family before publicizing the information.
The sheriff’s office, which worked with this case again, had stated that this case was once again opened to give closure to the victim’s family.
