According to a report from law enforcement, former police officer Derek Chauvin, convicted of George Floyd’s murder, was gravely hurt in an FCI Tucson prison stabbing. According to the Bureau of Prisons, the incident happened about 12:30 p.m. Friday. The FBI was called when one inmate was hospitalized, but Chauvin was not named. No personnel were hurt, but the institution, which had a security problem in 2022, stopped visits. This is the second high-profile federal prisoner assault in months.
Derek Chauvin was stabbed at the Federal Correctional Institution (FCI) in Tucson while serving time for George Floyd’s murder. In 2022, Chauvin was moved from a Minnesota state jail, raising safety concerns. After the Supreme Court rejected Chauvin’s appeal and bid to invalidate the federal guilty plea, the attack began. Due to recent high-profile security breaches, the federal Bureau of Prisons is under examination. The Associated Press found planned sexual abuse, criminal behavior, violence, and personnel shortages. Bureau of Prisons Director Colette Peters promises change, but freedom and speed are rejected. Lawmakers doubt that continuing systemic reforms will work.
