Parents Facing Charges With Neglect And Drug Possession After 16-Month-Old Boy Fatally Shot By Brother

A 16-year-old boy was shot by his brother and tested positive for marijuana and his brother had cocaine in his system. The police arrested the parents and faced charges of neglect and drug possession.

The US Prosecutors filed charges of neglect and drug possession against Deonta Jermaine Johnson and Shatia Tiara Welch the parents of a 16-month-old Isiah Johnson who was shot by his 5-year-old brother after the child found a handgun in their apartment. Isiah Johnson died from a gunshot to his head and tested positive for marijuana and his 5-year-old brother tested positive for cocaine.

According to AP News, the police said at the time of the shooting incident Deonta Jermaine Johnson was asleep inside their apartment and heard a “loud boom” and found his son in his bedroom and Shatia Tiara Welch wasn’t around. At the scene, the police officers found 93 fentanyl pills, marijuana, and paraphernalia inside the apartment and the mother told she owns the gun but she usually kept it in a box under their bed.

Deonta Jermaine Johnson and Shatia Tiara Welch were both from Indiana and have been charged with multiple felonies these include one count of neglect of a dependent resulting in death, one count of neglect of a dependent resulting in bodily injury, one count of conspiracy to commit dealing in a narcotic drug and one count of possession of a narcotic drug.
