California Buys Housing Units for Homeless Worth $156 Million

California Gov. Gavin Newsom announced that an amount of $156 million is allocated to buy and build homes for counties across the state.

Housing Units for Homeless

Housing is still one of the biggest problems in almost all states across the country. This has become a significant problem during and after the pandemic where millions of American families lost their jobs and could no longer afford to pay their mortgages.

In a published article in NBC Los Angeles, state Gov. Gavin Newsom announced that an amount of $156 million is intended to buy and build affordable housing for the residents living in the different counties across the state. This is an expansion of the program called Project Roomkey.

Counties Implementing Project Roomkey

According to an article published in the San Francisco Examiner, the California Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD) approved the funding of Project Roomkey. This will give grants to Alameda, Fresno, Los Angeles, Monterey, San Francisco and Riverside county.

Furthermore, Newsom said, “Homekey continues to demonstrate that we can build quickly, and at a fraction of the usual cost, to deliver much-needed affordable homes for Californians struggling to find a place to live.”
