A MUCH-APPRECIATED restaurant in the Golden State that holds a Michelin star has been sent with an eviction notice due to unpaid rent. The destination restaurant in San Francisco is well-known for the Moroccan cuisine it serves as well as the live entertainment it offers.

Overdue Rent of Moroccan Cuisine Restaurant
According to the San Francisco Business Times, the landlord of the restaurant filed a lawsuit against Michelin star restaurant Berber on November 1 alleging that the restaurant owes $96,000 in overdue rent. The action was filed in San Francisco Superior Court. In 2018, Borhem Hammami, a seasoned restaurateur, and Tony Garnicki, a first-time entrepreneur in the restaurant industry, debuted Berber in California, beginning with a facility that was 4,000 square feet in size.
Their landlord, Polk Street Associates, has initiated legal action in response to Berber’s failure to pay rent beginning in July of 2023, as stated in the complaint. Despite the notice of eviction, Berber continues to post on Instagram about the specials they are offering during San Francisco Restaurant Week as well as the Thanksgiving special they will be serving. On the menu, they have everything from traditional Moroccan dips to burgers made with camel.
The Michelin Guide has previously remarked on the uniqueness of Berber by referring to it as a “dinner and a show” and highlighting the fact that it features “live musicians and dancers to acrobats and aerialists” in addition to its Moroccan prix fixe menu and original cocktails. According to SF Gate, the restaurant was given a three-day warning to either pay the outstanding rent or cease operations, but the deadline for doing either of those things had passed by October 23, 2023. It was not immediately obvious what the next steps would be in the lawsuit.
