PEACHTREE CITY, GA – Georgia residents should prepare for dramatic temperature drops and possible snowfall early next week as an Arctic air mass passes through the region. Forecasters predict sub-freezing conditions will begin Monday night, with snow chances increasing by Tuesday afternoon.
Wind chills could drop into the single digits by Tuesday morning, with a 20-50% chance of snowfall across central and northern Georgia, according to the National Weather Service. Motorists should use caution as icy conditions may develop, especially on major routes such as Interstate 85 and Highway 54.
The weather on Sunday will be mild, the sky will be mostly cloudy and the maximum temperature will be around 47 degrees. However, the first signs of a cold front will emerge on Monday, when temperatures will reach just 31 degrees and drop to 16 degrees overnight.
Tuesday brings the highest risk for winter weather, with a high of 35 and a chance of snow in the afternoon. Accumulation remains uncertain, but slippery roads are to be expected. Temperatures will drop to 17 degrees overnight, increasing the chance of ice formation.
Residents should make sure their vehicles are winterized, stock up on emergency supplies and monitor weather updates. Power outages are possible with freezing rain.
The week will end with some relief. It will be sunny but cold on Wednesday and the maximum temperature will be around 37 degrees. Overnight low temperatures will drop into the teens, leaving the area extremely cold.
