CHARLESTON, SC – Freezing rain and snow are expected to cause hazardous conditions in Charleston and surrounding areas early this week. The National Weather Service predicts the worst impacts will occur Tuesday night into Wednesday, with road conditions expected to be hazardous.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), freezing rain could begin Tuesday evening, leading to snow as temperatures drop overnight. Local highways, including I-26 and US-17, may be icy, posing significant risks to drivers. Residents are advised to limit non-essential travel and prepare for delays or closures.

According to the forecast, rain will dominate today and the maximum temperature will be around 58°F, which will reduce by evening. Sunday will see scattered showers in the early morning, followed by cloudy skies in the afternoon with a high around 63°F. On Monday, the area will have a cool, sunny day with highs reaching 41°F.

By Tuesday the situation became worse. Rain will start early in the day and turn to freezing rain by evening. A low of 27°F is expected overnight, which will allow snow to accumulate before snowfall begins. There will be a chance of snow and wind on Wednesday, with a high near 35°F.

Local emergency officials are urging residents to prepare now. Stock up on essential items, check weather warnings and make sure vehicles are equipped for winter conditions. Power outages are possible due to snow accumulation on lines and trees.

Stay tuned for updates and keep an eye on the NWS for real-time weather alerts. When winter weather arrives in the Charleston area, drivers should take precautions and plan ahead to stay safe.
