Omaha, NE – An arctic blast will impact eastern Nebraska and western Iowa from Sunday through Tuesday, with dangerous wind chills as low as -30°F. Residents should prepare for the risk of frostbite and travel disruptions on major routes including Interstate 80.
According to the National Weather Service in Omaha, the cold weather warning begins at midnight Saturday and continues through Tuesday afternoon. Lows will drop to -5°F at night, with morning wind chills reaching -30°F. Gusty north winds of 20 to 30 mph will further complicate cold conditions, creating life-threatening conditions.
Sunday morning will bring wind chills ranging from -15 to -30°F across the region. These conditions will persist each morning through Tuesday, making it important to limit outdoor activities and dress in layers, including a hat and gloves. Frostbite on exposed skin can occur within 30 minutes.
High temperatures on Sunday and Monday will struggle to reach the teens, while overnight lows will dip below zero. There may be some relief Tuesday with highs near 20°F, but wind chills will remain dangerous early in the day.
Travelers on I-80 and other major roads should use caution as high winds may blow snow and slippery surfaces. Schools and businesses are advised to prepare for possible delays or closures if conditions worsen.
Looking ahead, temperatures are expected to rise by mid-week, with some respite on Wednesday with highs hovering around 30.
