Researchers and the general public were quite interested in Breton’s behavior on Thursday, as seen by the tracking data gathered by OCEARCH, a worldwide nonprofit organization devoted to studying marine life.
At 10:51 a.m. on Wednesday, Breton’s first “ping” was detected, indicating that he had first surfaced. Breton was monitored once more on Thursday, with pings being taken at 12:37, 3:55, 5:30, and 6:49 p.m.
When a tagged shark surface momentarily, its tracking tag, which is fastened to the dorsal fin, can interact with satellites, causing a “ping,” according to OCEARCH. Researchers can learn a lot about the shark’s whereabouts and movements thanks to this data.
Breton spent Friday and Saturday traveling west after his appearances at Daytona Beach.
He moved consistently and admirably, as seen by his most recent ping, which put him on the Blake Plateau. OCEARCH’s tracking data shows that Breton has traveled an astounding roughly 139 miles in the past 72 hours.
When Breton left the Canadian shore of Newfoundland in early November and headed for Florida, his journey was a part of a broader migration.
Being the first shark to be tagged during OCEARCH’s Expedition Nova Scotia 2020, Breton has a special place in the organization’s research history.
He was given his name in honor of Cape Breton, where he was first discovered by researchers. Over the past four and a half years, Breton has traveled over 41,000 kilometers, demonstrating her extraordinary travel skills.
At Scatarie Island, where white sharks have been consistently found, OCEARCH has tagged a number of sharks, including Breton.
Five sharks have been tagged by OCEARCH researchers in their two years of work in the area, indicating that it might be a substantial and consistent habitat for the species.
