The Los Gatos-Saratoga Union High School District’s music students and staff have been recognized for their artistry and skill development at the state level.
In all, 31 students from Los Gatos and Saratoga high schools were accepted into the California All-State Music Education Conference’s honor ensembles and were set to perform at the conference in Sacramento Jan. 16-19, held by the California Music Educators Association (CMEA).
Los Gatos High School boasts 13 students and Saratoga High School has 18 in the ensembles at the conference in categories ranging from choir to violin.
The Los Gatos High School treble choir was also selected to perform at the conference, marking the second time a school from the district has had a “featured conference ensemble” in the mix. Saratoga High School’s Symphonic Wind Ensemble was selected for the same performance in 2024.
“These accomplishments are a testament to the dedication of our educators, students and families,” interim superintendent Heath Rocha said in a release.
Jason Shiuan, music teacher and band director at Saratoga High School, is being honored at the conference as CMEA’s Educator of the Year for his “extraordinary contributions to music education.”
The CMEA recognized Shiuan’s work on a community-based instruction program to integrate special education students into Saratoga High’s music ensemble classes, according to a press release from the district.
“Jason’s recognition and the achievements of our students reflect the strength of the music programs in our schools,” Rocha said. “I am so honored to have them represent our district on a statewide stage.”
