Let the waves and the stars put you to sleep
If you’re the type who prefers the sound of waves or a calm river over city noise, these Virginia parks should be on your list. Each one lets you camp near the water, along with other fun things to do.

False Cape State Park
False Cape’s not easy to reach. You’ll need to walk, bike, or boat in, but that’s why it’s so peaceful. Camping is $20 for VA residents and $25 for others. There are 12 tent-only sites, no RVs.
Dogs are allowed in most parts, just not in the wildlife refuge. Hike the Sand Ridge Trail for great views of Back Bay and the Atlantic.
First Landing State Park
First Landing’s packed with history. It’s where the English settlers landed in 1607. Parking’s $7 on weekdays and $10 on weekends, with camping ranging from $30 to $46 a night. You’ve got tent sites, RV hookups, and cabins to pick from.
Dogs are welcome, but they must stay on a leash. With 19 miles of trails, kayaking, and fishing, there’s a lot to do here.
Kiptopeke State Park
Kiptopeke’s a birdwatcher’s dream. Over 300 species and prime raptor spotting during migration. It’s $7 to get in, and camping’s $30 to $47 a night. Some sites have views of Chesapeake Bay, and the beach is just a short walk away.
Bring your dog—just keep it on a leash. Don’t miss the Kiptopeke Hawkwatch if you’re there in the fall.
Chippokes State Park
Chippokes is one of the oldest continually farmed properties in the country. It’s right on the James River. Entry’s $7, and camping’s $25 to $40 a night. Tent and RV sites are available. There are about 12 miles of trails, including a paved one.
Fishing on the river is a great way to pass the time. Dogs are allowed on leashes, so bring them along for the ride.
Westmoreland State Park
Westmoreland’s along the Potomac River, perfect for fishing or kayaking. It’s $7 during the week, $10 on weekends, and camping runs from $25 to $40 a night. There are over six miles of trails, including Big Meadow Trail, which is easy for beginners.
If you like fossils, hunt for shark teeth along the cliffs. Kayak rentals are available, and dogs are welcome on leashes.
Assateague Island National Seashore
Assateague’s known for its wild ponies and untouched beaches. The 7-day pass is $25, and camping’s $40 a night. Campsites are close to the beach, so you can’t beat the location.
You can kayak, fish, or crab right from the shore. Horseback riding’s allowed on certain trails. Dogs are only allowed on the Maryland side, though. It’s a great spot for a peaceful getaway.
Belle Isle State Park
Belle Isle’s a hidden gem along the Rappahannock River. Entry’s $5, and camping’s between $15 and $35 a night. The park has about 7 miles of trails for hiking, biking, or horseback riding. You can fish or kayak right from your campsite.
Keep an eye out for bald eagles and ospreys. The park has interpretive signs along the trails to learn about the wildlife. Dogs are allowed on leashes.
