Houston police are investigating a fatal crash that occurred around 2:15 a.m. on Tuesday, January 8, 2025, on the Southwest Freeway (South U.S. Highway 59) near the Kirby Road exit ramp.
A 40-year-old male, whose identity is pending verification by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences, was driving a black Honda Civic westbound when he failed to stay in a single lane and struck a guardrail. The impact disabled the vehicle, causing it to roll into a moving lane of traffic where it was struck by a black Hyundai Veloster.
The driver of the Honda exited the vehicle and jumped off the freeway to avoid further collisions. Meanwhile, the Hyundai was struck by a green Kia Soul, which was also traveling on the freeway.
The 26-year-old male driver of the Hyundai Veloster was pronounced deceased at the scene by responding Houston Fire Department paramedics. The driver of the Honda, also a male, sustained injuries from the fall and was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. The 40-year-old female driver of the Kia Soul and her 33-year-old male passenger were transported to the hospital with minor injuries.
The investigation into the crash is ongoing.
