Springfield, IL – Central Illinois residents should prepare for unsettled weather as rain and patchy fog could affect post-Christmas travel. A warming trend will also bring unseasonably mild temperatures this week, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).
Rain is expected to develop tonight, primarily east of the Illinois River, continuing through Christmas Day. Areas along I-55 could see persistent showers, with patchy morning fog further reducing visibility for holiday travelers. Temperatures will range from the low 40s tonight to the mid-50s by Friday, 15-20 degrees above seasonal averages.
The NWS reports additional rain chances Thursday evening into Saturday, with heavier rainfall likely across southeast Illinois. A slight chance of freezing rain remains for areas northeast of Peoria early Wednesday morning, but widespread icy conditions are not expected.
Travelers are urged to monitor road conditions and use caution when driving, especially in fog-prone areas. Those planning trips later this week should remain updated as the forecast evolves.
