Pittsburgh, PA – A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect across portions of southwestern Pennsylvania, northern West Virginia, and western Virginia until 7 p.m. on Christmas Eve, with icy conditions expected to persist through the evening commute.
The National Weather Service reports that mixed precipitation, including light freezing drizzle and snow, is creating hazardous road conditions. Higher elevations in Westmoreland and Fayette counties, along with Preston and Tucker counties in West Virginia, are particularly impacted, with additional snow accumulations of up to half an inch and a light glaze of ice reported.
The advisory highlights areas on ridge tops and west-facing slopes as particularly vulnerable to black ice, with temperatures near freezing limiting melting. Slippery roads could impact travel plans, making caution essential for anyone on the move this holiday evening.
Travelers are urged to slow down and stay alert, particularly on untreated surfaces. Road conditions can be checked by dialing 511, and snow or ice accumulations can be reported to the NWS Pittsburgh office via social media.
Updates on weather conditions and safety recommendations will continue throughout the day.
