Turkish authorities have successfully rescued a baby gorilla that was being smuggled in a small crate, highlighting ongoing efforts to combat illegal wildlife trade. The endangered primate, identified as a western gorilla, was intercepted at Istanbul Airport while being transported from Nigeria to Thailand without proper documentation.
Baby gorilla found in crate, wearing a T-shirt
Footage released by Turkey’s Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry shows the rescued gorilla, dressed in a t-shirt, being freed from its cramped crate. The video also depicts National Parks staff feeding the animal with a baby bottle and providing critical care.
The Ministry confirmed that the crate was seized during a routine inspection by Customs Enforcement teams under the Ministry of Trade. The operation was part of a broader initiative to protect endangered wildlife species from illegal trafficking.
Health status and immediate care
Authorities reported that the baby gorilla’s health is improving, but it remains under close observation. For now, it is being cared for by Turkey’s National Parks staff. However, its long-term placement remains unclear, and recovery and further assessments are pending.
Global concern for the western gorilla
The western gorilla (Gorilla gorilla), one of two gorilla species, is native to the tropical rainforests of Central and West Africa, including Cameroon, Gabon, and the Republic of Congo. These primarily herbivorous creatures are known for their robust size, with males weighing between 140 and 200 kilograms and females reaching up to 100 kilograms.
The species is classified as critically endangered by conservation groups due to significant threats, including habitat destruction, disease, and poaching. International trade of western gorillas is strictly regulated, with allowances only under special circumstances, such as scientific research.
Turkey’s commitment to wildlife protection
Turkey’s Ministry of Trade emphasized its commitment to preventing the exploitation of endangered species through rigorous monitoring and enforcement. The rescue of the baby animal serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of international cooperation in tackling wildlife trafficking, a global issue with devastating consequences for biodiversity.
Authorities have not disclosed the identity of the parties involved in the trafficking operation or the next steps for the rescued gorilla, but the intervention underscores the vital role of customs and enforcement teams in protecting vulnerable species.
