New York horror: Stranger sets sleeping woman on fire on subway, victim dies

NEW YORK — In a shocking incident that has sent shockwaves through the city, a woman was burned to death while sleeping on a subway train in Brooklyn, with the suspect apprehended shortly after the crime on Sunday morning.

The deadly incident

The horrific attack occurred around 7:30 AM on an F train at its terminal station at Stillwell Avenue in Brooklyn. According to NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch, the suspect approached the sleeping victim and, in an act of inexplicable violence, set her clothing ablaze.

“The brutal murder” was captured by subway security cameras, confirmed Michael Kemper, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s chief security officer. The footage shows the suspect igniting the victim’s clothing, “which became fully engulfed in a matter of seconds,” Commissioner Tisch reported.

Swift arrest

In an unexpected turn of events, the perpetrator remained at the crime scene after committing the act. “Unbeknownst to the officers who responded, the suspect had stayed on the scene and was seated on a bench on the platform just outside the train car, and the body-worn cameras on the responding officers produced a very clear, detailed look at the killer,” Tisch revealed.

The lighter used in the attack was found in the suspect’s possession during his arrest.

Investigation ongoing

While the identities of both the victim and the suspect remain undisclosed, investigators have determined several key details:

First responders pronounced the victim dead at the scene after extinguishing the fire. Police officials indicate there was no prior interaction between the victim and her attacker, suggesting they were strangers to each other. The motive behind this seemingly random act of violence remains under active investigation.

The incident has raised renewed concerns about passenger safety on New York’s subway system, particularly during early morning hours when ridership is lower. The NYPD has launched a full homicide investigation into the case.

This is a developing story. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
