Watch: Georgia teacher throws 11-year-old student across classroom for confronting him

Shocking Assault Raises Questions About School Safety and Teacher Conduct

A disturbing incident at DeRenne Middle School in Savannah, Georgia, has sparked outrage after a teacher physically assaulted a student during a classroom confrontation, leaving the young boy with serious injuries and his family demanding justice.

Che’Nelle Russell, the mother of 11-year-old TJ, recounted the harrowing sequence of events that unfolded when her son confronted teacher and football coach BeTreylin Elder about inappropriate remarks. “I was told that he had a share of words that were inappropriate to TJ and that he had made some remarks about me and my son,” Russell told local media.

The violent confrontation

According to Russell’s testimony, the incident escalated when her son approached the teacher to demand he stop making offensive comments. “My son went to the front of the classroom to approach the teacher, letting him know, ‘Stop talking about my mom’.”

In a moment of uncontrolled aggression, Elder reportedly grabbed the student by the chest, lifting him and violently throwing him across the classroom onto a desk. Shocking video evidence captured the assault, showing the young student being hurled like a rag doll, with other students visibly traumatized by the incident.

Russell revealed that the comments made by Elder were “sexual in nature,” including a suggestive remark about leaving shoes at her house. The confrontation resulted in TJ being rushed to the emergency room, where he was diagnosed with a concussion and multiple bruises.

School’s initial response

Following the incident, school officials immediately removed Elder from teaching duties, initially reassigning him to a non-student-facing role before he ultimately resigned from his position.

Che’Nelle Russell expressed deep frustration with what she sees as an inadequate response to the assault. “He needs to be placed in jail. He hurt my boy,” she stated emphatically. Her emotional statement underscored the deep trauma caused by the incident, questioning the teacher’s fitness to work with children.

Legal implications

As of now, no criminal charges have been filed against Elder, according to the Savannah Morning News, leaving many to question the accountability for such a severe breach of professional conduct.

The incident has raised significant concerns about teacher-student interactions and the mechanisms in place to protect students from potential abuse. It highlights the critical need for rigorous screening, training, and immediate intervention in cases of teacher misconduct.

The story of TJ and BeTreylin Elder serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerability of students and the absolute necessity of maintaining safe, respectful learning environments.
