The United States men’s soccer team takes on Mexico in an international friendly at 7:30 p.m. PDT on Tuesday, Oct. 15 at Estadio Akron in Zapopan, near Guadalajara, Mexico.
This game is all about the new coaches for both teams.
It is Javier Aguirre‘s third pass at the helm of the Mexican national team, having been in charge for the 2002 and 2010 World Cups in Japan/Korea and South Africa, respectively. Having qualified automatically, Aguirre is set to prepare Mexico for the third World Cup in its home soil in 2026. This is Aguirre’s third match this cycle. El Vasco’s team defeated New Zealand and tied with Canada before today’s match in Guadalajara.
On the other hand, Mauricio Pochettino’s debut as the new coach of the US men’s national team was a 2-0 win over Panama on October 12, getting high marks. The Argentine’s most recent job before taking over the US from Gregg Belhalter was at Chelsea in the Premier League, finishing sixth in his one and only season with the team. For this game, Pochettino will be without several Americans who compete in Europe, including Christian Pulisic, due to “load management.” Others departing after the Panama game were goalkeeper Zack Steffen, defender Marlon Fossey, midfielder Weston McKennie, and forward Ricardo Pepi.
The US defeated Mexico 2-0 in their most recent match in the final of the CONCACAF Nations League in March 2024.
