Melvin Jordan, free on bond for first-degree murder, was caught for holding two firefighters at knifepoint in an Auburn Gresham basement.

Jordan had served 14 years of a 35-year sentence for the 2005 murder of 35-year-old Aaron Dickens when he was granted a new trial in 2019.

New Trial For Jordan After Allegedly Stabbing Firefighters in His House

Jordan was granted a new trial in 2019 after serving 14 years of a 35-year sentence for the 2005 murder of 35-year-old Aaron Dickens. His mother paid a $450,000 bond for him in April. On Friday, the court revoked the bond and placed Jordan on a no-bond order for his current crime. Jordan faces attempted murder, unlawful restraint, and aggravated kidnapping while armed charges against two Chicago firemen.

CBS 2’s Suzanne Le Mignot said the Cook County Criminal Court judge presented an excellent cause to deny Jordan’s bond. Jordan is accused of committing a felony while out on bond, but the judge indicated he is a significant public threat.

According to prosecutors, Jordan, 47 years old, requested firemen to extinguish this garage fire at 77th Street and Marshfield Avenue around noon Tuesday. After that, he called firefighters to his basement for a gas leak. The firefighters continued upstairs without smelling gas. Prosecutors claim Jordan stabbed them with an 8- to 10-inch knife and said, “You’re not going anywhere. Sit down.”

Bond Revoked Due to Alleged Stabbing Firefighters

Prosecutors alleged Jordan knifed them from the kitchen to the living room. Jordan barred the back and front doors with deadbolts and wooden two-by-fours, which both firefighters discovered. Firefighters tried to shatter the front door while one called for help on his radio. They couldn’t. Jordan refused to open the doors, stating he would only talk to the FBI, prosecutors said. Both firefighters escaped through a front window. Prosecutors stated gasoline covered the first floor. Attorney Joshua Kutnick represents Jordan.

“This is unusual. Complex challenges arise “Kutnick stated. Mr. Jordan and his family are pleased no one was hurt in this incident, including him.” No crime motive was revealed in court. Police recovered a 9mm handgun in the house. Jordan’s lawyers requested a mental health evaluation from the judge.
