The Food and Drug Administration has given more than a dozen pharmaceutical companies permission to begin marketing generic versions of the attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) treatment Vyvanse, which could help to alleviate an acute shortage of ADHD medications.
Generics of ADHD Drug Vyvanse Approved by the Food and Drug Administration
As per the report of Forbes, the Food and Drug Administration on Monday declared that generic versions of Vyvanse, an increasingly well-liked Adderall substitute, had been approved. More than a million Americans regularly use Vyvanse, which is frequently prescribed to treat both attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and binge eating disorder.
As a result of the shortages, doctors began prescribing mainly to the parents of Vyvanse prescriptions more frequently. The number of Vyvanse prescriptions increased by over 30% between May 2022 and May 2023. Unsurprisingly, Vyvanse also became more difficult to find.
Earlier this summer, Takeda revealed supply shortages for its 40mg, 60mg, and 70mg Vyvanse capsules due to a “manufacturing delay compounded by increased demand.”
Short Supply of Multiple ADHD Drugs
According to the report of Everyday Health, for almost a year, it has been challenging to find ADHD medications. In October 2022, the Food and Drug Administration for the first time noted shortages of the ADHD medication Adderall. Other ADHD medications became hard to get by as patients searched for alternatives. The Food and Drug Administration reported a shortage of the ADHD medications Concerta and Vyvanse in July.
The Food and Drug Administration has now authorized a total of 14 different businesses to produce generic versions of Vyvanse, all of which have the same active component as the name-brand medication. For individuals with moderate to severe binge eating disorder, another illness that can be treated with Vyvanse, and for those with ADHD 6 years of age and older, regulators approved both capsules and chewable tablets.
