Florida’s Fort Lauderdale: Over the weekend, a Texas man was taken into custody in South Florida on suspicion of raping a woman while on a cruise ship. The woman reported to authorities last week that she was raped by the suspect, Juan Campos, when they were on a cruise.
Campos, 28, is being held at the Broward County Main Jail after being taken into custody upon disembarking from Royal Caribbean’s Freedom of the Seas at Port Everglades. According to his lawyer, he stopped when the victim told him to.
Attorney Ed Hoeg stated, “It was a typical cruise; he was with friends, they met some people on board, and the next thing you know, he’s charged with this crime.” Last week, the victim, a 20-year-old woman, and Campos were on board the ship.
Got little serious
They were in close physical contact on August 28 at around two in the morning, according to an arrest record. “It appears that they were flirting, and when she said,’stop,’ he stopped,” Hoeg remarked. “It got a little too serious.”
The victim was forced to have an unknown item into her, according to the police record, which also notes that she put her hands on the defendant’s shoulders and pushed him because she was in pain.
According to the complaint, the victim told officers that Campos attempted to penetrate her again and was unsuccessful in getting her to perform oral sex on him. Hoeg remarked, “I don’t read it that way; otherwise, they would have charged it with force or using violence.”
It is sexual battery, as stated by the police themselves; there is no use of force or violence. Campos is from a law enforcement family and is from Houston. Hoeg stated, “The family says this guy is a great kid, he’s on vacation, and they are shocked by the allegations. He has no criminal history.”
