Hersh Goldberg-Polin cherished music and soccer. His mother said he was enquiring, courteous, and enthusiastic about geography and travel. Born in the Bay Area, he relocated to Israel at the age of eight. Los Angeles based rabbi Andy Feig was raised with Mr. Goldberg-Polin’s father and later visited the family in California. The Anti-Defamation League of Los Angeles’ regional director, Jeffrey Abrams, recalled a pleasant recollection of Mr. Goldberg-Polin’s family in 2010.
After getting to know Mr. Goldberg-Polin’s parents through a common friend, Mr. Abrams, his wife, and their three young sons invited them to their apartment for a Sabbath dinner. When he was nine years old, Mr. Goldberg-Polin was a huge, curly-haired child who loved to ride his tricycle. Mr. Goldberg-Polin attended a preschool run by Orly Lewis, the chief executive of the Weinstein Jewish Community Center in Richmond, Virginia, and Lewis recalled Mr. Goldberg-Polin as an enjoyable and accepting young man.

Mr. Goldberg-Polin lost a portion of his arm protecting an emergency shelter from Hamas gunmen after being kidnapped during a music festival. His parents, Jon Polin and Rachel Goldberg, have been vocal supporters of the captives’ release during the 11 months since they were kidnapped. They have given lectures, had meetings with the Pope and government representatives, and last month they even spoke at the Democratic National Convention in their hometown. Both Ms. Goldberg and Mr. Polin wore pieces of tape at the convention that read 320, which was the number of days their son had been held captive.
