Over 100,000 Virginians Missing Out on SNAP Benefits, Especially Seniors

According to ABC 8 News, a new report shows that many Virginians who qualify for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits are not using them. Over 100,000 Virginians are eligible for this food help but are not signed up. The problem is especially big among seniors aged 65 and older, with only about 37% of eligible seniors in Virginia using SNAP benefits.

The report also finds that this issue varies by county. In Henrico County, 4,773 eligible seniors are not enrolled, while Richmond and Chesterfield County have 3,274 and 3,247 eligible seniors not using the benefits, respectively. Ramsey Alwin, President and CEO of the National Council on Aging, said it is “shocking and unacceptable” that so many older adults are missing out on this important assistance.
