According to Wavy, a new report shows that many seniors in Hampton Roads are missing out on food benefits they could get. The National Council on Aging and the Urban Institute found that over 100,000 Virginians aged 65 and older are eligible for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits but are not using them. In Hampton Roads, more than 15,500 seniors are missing these benefits.
Some seniors might not apply for benefits because they feel embarrassed, think they don’t qualify, or find the application process too hard. Larhonda Ross from the Norfolk Department of Human Services said that it’s important for seniors to get this help, and they should not be afraid or too proud to ask for it.

The Elderly Simplified Application Project makes it easier for seniors to apply for benefits. Seniors can check if they qualify and apply through the Common Help website or by visiting their local human services department. Ross said that getting SNAP benefits can help seniors eat better and avoid financial stress, which is important for their health.
